Introducing Abua Awas Yojana

The Abua Awas Yojana seeks to change this narrative. Under this scheme, eligible families—those who have not previously benefited from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana—will receive a solid, three-room house free of cost. The state government has allocated a budget of ₹15,000 crore for this purpose, with the ambitious goal of providing housing to 8 lakh families within the next two years.

Objective:

  • The Abua Awas Yojana seeks to fulfil the promise of providing homes to those who lack permanent shelter.
  • The state government has allocated over ₹15,000 crore for the scheme, which will run independently from the central government’s PM Awas Yojana.
  • The latter is set to conclude by March 2024, while the Abua Awas Yojana will continue to provide housing support.

Financial Assistance:

  • Eligible families receive ₹2,00,000 from the government to construct these houses.

Eligibility Criteria:

    • Must be residents of Jharkhand.
    • Families living in kachcha houses or without shelter.
    • Particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs).
    • Families affected by natural disasters.
    • Former bonded labourers.
    • Families not benefiting from other housing schemes.
    • Families with specific assets (e.g., fishing boats, agricultural machinery).
    • The scheme targets vulnerable groups, including labourers, farmers, tribals, Dalits, and those excluded from the PM Awas Yojana.
    • Approximately 900,000 pending applications for houses under the PM Awas Yojana will now be considered under the Abua Awas Yojana.
    • The state government estimates that around 7.5 lakh people in rural areas will benefit from this initiative.

Construction Timeline:

  • The scheme was officially launched on November 15, 2022.
  • The first instalment of the Abua Awas Yojana will be distributed during a program in the Khunti district on January 23, 2024.

If your name comes in the final list of the Abua Housing Scheme run by the Jharkhand government, then the government will provide you with an amount of ₹ 200000 in 4 instalments for the construction of a three-room permanent house.

  • At the time of the first installment, you will get an amount of ₹ 30000 i.e. 15%.
  • In the second installment, you will get an amount of ₹ 50000 i.e. 25%.
  • In the third installment, you will get 50% i.e. 1 lakh amount.

The Challenge of Poverty in Jharkhand

Jharkhand, a predominantly rural state, grapples with poverty as a pressing issue. Most of its population resides in villages and relies heavily on agriculture. However, due to crop losses and low wages, many families find themselves trapped in poverty. Access to decent housing remains a distant dream for them.
