All Assam districts are divided into five large regional divisions for law and order. Each regional division has a commissioner. We’ve included all Assam districts here. Assam has 31 districts in 2025. Last year, the state had 35 districts. On 31 December 2022, the Assam Cabinet merged four newly established districts into four old ones, making 31 districts in the state. Assam History
Assam had 13 districts when India attained independence in 1947. North Cachar Hills and United Mikir were created from Golaghat, Nagaon, Cachar, Jayantia, and Naga Hills in November 1951. Sonitpur, Barpeta, Jorhat, Karimganj, Dhubri, and Kokrajhar districts were created in 1983 from Darrang, Kamrup, Sibsagar, Cachar, and Goalpara. From Kamrup came Kamrup Metropolitan in February 2003.
On Independence Day 2015, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced five new districts. The state now has 32 districts, up from 27. Two new Assam districts were declared on 26 January 2016, but two were withdrawn on 7 October 2016. In August 2020, Assam had 34 districts, but in December 2022, four were combined into four others. The state has 31 districts.
