Full list of US 2025 Federal Holidays: Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and Donald Trump’s inauguration are on Monday, January 20. Every year, King Jr., the leader of the American civil rights movement who died in 1968, is remembered for leading peaceful rallies, including the March on Washington, to eliminate segregation. The inaugural Martin Luther King Day was in 1986, three years after President Ronald Reagan signed a measure making his birthday a federal holiday.
Presidential, vice presidential, and congressional inaugurations began on March 4. The 20th Amendment moved Inauguration Day to January 20 in 1933. Each president-elect since then has taken the oath of office every four years, whether first or second.
Though Martin Luther King Day and Inauguration Day are federal holidays, private sector workers are not compelled to take two days off.
Federal holidays only apply to federal government employees and institutions; therefore, workers may not get a day off. Individual employers decide whether to grant time off or extra compensation on government holidays.
