List of 18 OTT platforms blocked in 2024 for Vulgar Content: This year, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) punished 18 OTT platforms for distributing vulgar, indecent, and pornographic content. Content that violated Indian legislation led to these platforms’ ban. In India, 19 websites, 10 mobile apps (7 on the Google Play Store and 3 on the Apple App Store), and 57 social media accounts were disabled to restrict public access.
In a statement, Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said content providers cannot utilize ‘creative expression’ to promote harmful content.
The crackdown followed the Information Technology Act, 2000, with inputs from various Ministries and Departments of the Indian Government and media, entertainment, women’s, and child rights experts.

Why were these OTT platforms blocked?
The Ministry found these platforms’ content offensive, insulting to women, and often sexual. Scenes depicted inappropriate student-teacher and incestuous familial ties. This content breaks multiple laws, including:
- Sections 67 and 67A of the IT Act, 292 of the IPC
- 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
One app on the list had over 1 crore downloads, and two had 50 lakh. They shared previews and links on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X (previously Twitter) to attract viewers. Over 32 lakh people followed their social media pages. The government promotes OTT growth but requires appropriate content. This firm measure underscores the government’s commitment to digital entertainment ethics.
